# Understanding a tongue crib

A tongue crib is a fixed appliance intended to interrupt a habit or unwanted tongue pressure\.

## The described arrangement

Cleveland Clinic describes a crib over back teeth, forming a barrier to forward tongue pressure in children with tongue thrust\.

That is the description used here, not a drawing of every design or an instruction to choose one\. A family can ask the clinician to identify the proposed appliance and explain its purpose\.

## A completed family explanation

This is an invented teaching conversation, not a real patient, SMILE\-FX® recommendation or treatment result\. The clinician supplies a finding; the family does not infer it from a thumb habit\.

Clinician: “Your tongue presses forward\. This crib’s proposed job is a barrier to that pressure\.”

Child: “The barrier is for my tongue’s forward push, not a promise about my bite\.”

Guardian: “I understand that purpose\. Tooth and bite alignment still needs its own assessment and decision\.”

The child adds, “I want to ask what worries me\.” The guardian agrees to listen and help ask, without making cooperation a test of character\.

Welcome encouragement remains a family choice\. The existing [support chapter](</supporting-a-child-with-a-sucking-habit>) and [Maya’s family discussion](</reading-a-habit-and-orthodontic-plan>) develop that respectful conversation\.

## Your individual conversation

If you notice tongue thrust, arrange a professional examination\.

Already receiving care? Ask your treating team about the appliance proposed for you, its purpose and your individual directions\. Use that team’s existing contact arrangements for current concerns\.

At SMILE\-FX®, board\-certified orthodontists see every patient, including follow\-ups\. Doctor\-led explanation and continuity sit within digitally driven, aligner\-focused full\-service orthodontic care\. Read the [complete care model](</about-this-guide#care-model-about>) for the qualified details\.

This general guide does not confirm that SMILE\-FX® supplies a tongue crib or that one is suitable for you\. A new\-family conversation is separate from your current team’s responsibilities\.
